Hung for 5 nights between Cross Bay and Sawbill. Temps fell to the low twenties. Warmth was hard to sustain, even with a full surrounding quilt. Still better than a ground-sleeper.

Can anyone recommend a DIY solution that better deflects wind from under a ridge-lined tarp?

I'll let you know in two weeks. I'm testing out a cheap DIY canvas hammock sock made from a painters drop cloth.

An emergency blanket between the quilt and hammock will go a long way.

My first hammock mod was to convert the stock fly from my Hennessy Hammock into an 'under tarp' to block the wind. As a bonus, I ended up using it as the fly on my trip this summer when one spot was unable to accomodate my larger hex fly.

In a pinch I wonder if one couldn't rig something from just a couple trash bags or even a pack liner? Anything that blocks the wind to retain warmth.

I have a nylon rain poncho that is a little thicker than ladies nylon hose. For no thicker than it is it does an amazing job of retaining heat. I have used it under my ¾ length quilt and other times on top of my sleeping bag. Look at what you have for rain gear.

I use an underquilt protector.....works very well and adds a wee bit of warmth too.

+1 Easily adds 5-10 degrees to your bottom inulation. Having that dead space is the key.

Do You have any problems with condensation when using an underquilt protector?

This past October was the first time I felt the cold from a breeze while in my hammock. I'll be getting an UQP for sure just as a means to keep that breeze from sucking the warmth from around me.
